The Future of Mobile

There’s been a lot of chatter lately about mobile. It seems that everywhere you look someone is pushing the “latest and greatest” mobile device; whether it’s the new iPad, Kindle, smartphone… you name it! At BlueVolt, we recently released our HTML5 mobile interface for use with these mobile devices.

While the popularity of mobile seems to be skyrocketing, what does it all really mean? How are people using mobile? Is it really even that popular? This spring, the Business Insider’s intelligence team put together a presentation about the future of mobile, providing some very useful insight for businesses.

In 2011, the number of smartphones sold exceeded the number of PCs sold; arguably, that’s only the beginning of a very powerful trend. By 2016, the intelligence team estimates that for 500,000,000 PCs sold around the world, we’ll see sales of more than 2,000,000,000 smartphones and 2,500,000,000 tablets.

Last year, there were 6.4 billion cell phone subscribers across the globe - only about 7% of these were smartphone users. Moreover, the gap between smartphone and dumbphone users is quickly narrowing. Soon, smartphones will be commonplace, not just significantly used by young adults with a disposable income, but by the majority.

What are people doing on their smartphones and tablets? It should be no surprise that the primarily function is consuming online content - streaming music and videos, interacting on social media sites, playing games, shopping, surfing the web, etc.

Mobile certainly isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s seems like it is only just beginning.  We recommend training administrators consider optimizing their online training programs for mobile devices now, in order to stay on top of this growing trend.
